About Puente de Dios

Puente de Dios ("God's Bridge") is a stretch of the river a few kilometres from Tamasopo where the water has carved a cavern through the limestone. A slab of rock spans the river like a bridge, and beneath it an underground stream flows out into a deep pool of vivid turquoise water, fed by a spring and ringed by small waterfalls and jungle. Inside the cave there are stalactites, and on sunny days shafts of sunlight slip through openings in the rock and light up the water.

The pool is deep, 15 to 20 metres at its deepest according to México Desconocido, and the current is strong, so life jackets are compulsory. Ropes are strung across the water for swimmers to hold on to as they work their way towards the cavern, and lifeguards watch the area. Rocks are slippery, which is why water shoes are recommended, and México Desconocido does not advise bringing children under five. Visitors are asked not to wear sunscreen or other chemicals in the water.

The usual way in is from the car park above, down a stairway of about 300 steps cut into the slope of the canyon, which you have to climb back up afterwards. A longer, prettier option is to walk about a kilometre along the river from the Cabaña Aventuras camp, past the smaller falls known as Cascaditas. It is a community-run site with camping in front, simpler than the Tamasopo waterfalls park, and it is best avoided after heavy rain, when the river gets dangerous. This Puente de Dios is not to be confused with the waterfall of the same name in Querétaro's Sierra Gorda.
