Aquismón is a small town in the Huasteca Potosina, the green, humid eastern edge of San Luis Potosí, where about a third of residents identify as Indigenous. It is the starting point for the Sótano de las Golondrinas, the enormous pit cave where flocks of birds spiral out at dawn, and for other natural sites in the surrounding municipality. The town itself is compact and unhurried, a place to arrange guides, eat, and sleep before an early start.
History
Aquismón lies in Huastec, or Teenek, country, and its name comes from that language. Scholars have read it in different ways: tree at the foot of a well, clean well dug with a planting stick, or, according to the historian Joaquín Meade, place of shells in a well. What all the versions share is the well, and it is thought that they point to the nearby Sótano de las Golondrinas, the great pit that made the area known far beyond the Huasteca.
Today the town is the seat of a largely rural and Indigenous municipality, and it was named a Pueblo Mágico in 2018. A fuller account of its colonial and modern history is still being prepared.
