About Las Pozas

Las Pozas ("the pools") is the surrealist garden that the British poet and art patron Edward James built in the rainforest just outside Xilitla, in the mountains of the Huasteca Potosina. Along a stream with waterfalls and natural pools stand more than 28 concrete structures and sculptures: columns shaped like plants and flowers, arches, gateways, rooms without walls and stairways that spiral up and stop in mid-air, some of them four storeys tall. The whole property covers 37 hectares, of which 9 make up the sculpture garden and the rest is kept as forest.

James, a wealthy collector of surrealist art, first came to Xilitla in 1945 with his guide and friend Plutarco Gastélum, and at first grew orchids and kept exotic animals here. Between 1949 and his death in 1984 he spent a fortune, paid for partly by selling his art collection, building the garden with dozens of local masons, carpenters and blacksmiths; the carpenter José Aguilar made the wooden moulds into which the concrete was poured. The structures have whimsical names such as The House with a Roof like a Whale and The Staircase to Heaven, and several were left unfinished. The site opened to the public in 1994 and became a state heritage site in 2006; in 2007 the Fundación Pedro y Elena Hernández, the cement maker Cemex and the state government bought it and set up a foundation to restore it. It is on Mexico's tentative list for World Heritage.

Today visits are only with authorised guides, in groups of up to 25 on a walk of about an hour and a half along steps, ramps, bridges and narrow paths that are slippery when wet. Entries are capped each day, so booking ahead is wise, especially at weekends and holidays. Swimming in the pools is restricted and swimsuits are not allowed.
