Mountain 10 km northwest of Xilitla
The saddle-shaped peak above Xilitla, the highest point in the municipality, with coffee farms on its slopes.
La Silleta is the rocky massif that dominates the skyline northwest of Xilitla. Its name means "little saddle", from the dip between its two rock towers, and it is the highest point in the municipality. On clear days it is visible from much of the town, and it shows up in countless photos of the Sierra Madre around Las Pozas.
The lower slopes are farmland: small plots of coffee and corn, scattered houses and patches of cloud forest, which is a big part of the charm of a walk up. The state tourism material describes the mountain as a challenge for climbers, and the final rock section is technical ground that should only be attempted with proper gear and someone who knows the route.
For most visitors the realistic plan is a guided hike through the farms toward the base of the rocks, with wide views back over Xilitla and the canyons of the Huasteca. Go early, before the afternoon clouds roll in.
