    About Axtla de Terrazas

    Axtla de Terrazas is the seat of a small municipality in the far south-east of San Luis Potosí, down in the lowland Huasteca at roughly 100 metres above sea level and some 350 km from the state capital. The 2020 census counted 8,045 people in town, close to a third of whom identify as Indigenous; citrus orchards, cattle and trade keep the local economy going.

    The name is Nahuatl: achtli means seed, often read as the pumpkin seed of pipián, and -tlan marks abundance. "De Terrazas" has nothing to do with farm terraces; it honours Alfredo M. Terrazas, a figure of the Revolution. The municipality was created in 1826. Town sits on the Axtla River, formed where the Huichihuayán and Tancuilín meet and known for its herons, and for a long time the only way in was by boat. A brightly painted ferry still shuttles across at the southern end of town.

    Expect heat: the yearly average is near 25 °C, May can top 40 °C, and summer rains bring more than 2,300 mm a year. The main church is the parish of Santa Catarina de Alejandría, the municipality's patron saint, celebrated on 25 November. Other dates on the local calendar are Holy Cross on 3 May, San Isidro Labrador on 15 May, the Virgin of Guadalupe on 12 December and the Day of the Dead in early November. Just south, in Aguacatitla, stands healer Beto Ramón's rainbow-painted Castillo de la Salud, and Xilitla is half an hour away, which makes Axtla an easy stop between the mountains and Ciudad Valles.

    How to get to Axtla de Terrazas

    From Ciudad Valles head south on federal highway 85 towards Tamazunchale and take the Axtla de Terrazas turn-off: 1 h 25 min from Ciudad Valles, 81 km by road. From Xilitla, the nearest Pueblo Mágico, it is 30 min and 24 km. By public transport, Frontera runs regular buses from Ciudad Valles to Huichihuayán, about 30 minutes from Axtla, with colectivos and taxis along the highway from there. We found no published schedule for a direct bus to Axtla; ask at the Ciudad Valles bus station.
