    About Neblinas

    Neblinas sits at 907 metres, in the sierra and rolling hills of the Carso Huasteco, about 5 km from the seat of Chapulhuacán in northern Hidalgo. The climate is semi-warm and sub-humid, with summer rain and more moisture than most of the region, and its streams drain into the Amajac sub-basin, within the Moctezuma basin. In 2020 it counted 638 residents, 319 women and 319 men, in 169 occupied homes, 2.79% of the municipality.

    The population has moved little since 2000: 674 people then, 541 in 2005 and 647 in 2010. The locality has a high degree of marginalisation, and the municipality itself registers a high marginalisation index, with 50.7% of its people in moderate poverty and 27.3% in extreme poverty. Neblinas has a Diconsa store, one of 31 across the municipality.

    The municipality lives from maize and vegetables such as radish, lettuce, chile, cabbage and coriander, from livestock and honey, and the Amajac river gives catfish, mojarra and crayfish. Market day in Chapulhuacán is Sunday, when people come down from the communities.

    How to get to Neblinas

    Neblinas is about 5 km from Chapulhuacán (Wikipedia puts it about 5 km south-west of the municipal seat), so the route is to reach Chapulhuacán first, in Hidalgo's Huasteca near the San Luis Potosí border, and then follow the road of about 5 km. In a straight line Xilitla is about 31 km and Ciudad Valles about 98 km from the community (approx.).

    To reach Chapulhuacán, ask at Huejutla's bus station (with departures to Pachuca and Mexico City) and, once in the seat, look for a taxi or local transport. In the rainy season it is wisest to set out early and not leave the final stretch for dusk.
