About Acapa
Santiago Acapa lies in Hidalgo's Sierra Alta at 1,878 metres, on the mountainous terrain of the Carso Huasteco, with a temperate sub-humid climate and summer rains. It belongs to the Moctezuma river basin and the Amajac sub-basin. In 2020 it had 613 residents, 6.75% of the municipality of Tlahuiltepa; the figure has been falling since 1970, when the census counted 1,028.
Tlahuiltepa, in Nahuatl, means "place where clayey things are scattered". Farming rules the municipality: 60% of the working population is in the primary sector, with cattle, goats and pigs, plus honey and beeswax. Cultivable land is only about 4.4% of the territory.
What gives Acapa its place in the sierra's calendar is the fiesta. On 25 July the patron saint, Santiago Apóstol, is celebrated, and residents describe it as a big fiesta that represents the community; in 2026 they asked for money or goods from people living away and from visitors to cover the costs. The community also takes part in Tlahuiltepa's carnival and, in Holy Week, stages the Via Crucis, with over a thousand attendees, one of the most prominent in Hidalgo's sierra.
How to get to Acapa
Acapa is in the sierra of the municipality of Tlahuiltepa, in the north of the state. In a straight line Metztitlán is about 38 km away and Pachuca about 89 km; the estimates are roughly 45 and 100 minutes' drive, but the mountains lengthen the real trip considerably and these figures are calculated, not measured. There is no published road itinerary or bus line for the village: the practical way is to reach the municipal seat, Tlahuiltepa, and ask there how to get up to Acapa. If you are going for the 25 July fiesta or the Holy Week Via Crucis, leave early: both dates bring many people.
