The name is Nahuatl and is usually rendered "stone surrounded by thread". Local tradition says Fray Antonio de Roa, the Augustinian who evangelised the Sierra Alta, settled here in 1538 and built the church of Santa Catarina; Lolotla was a visita of Molango until 1593, when it became a priorate, and was erected as a parish in 1751. Saint Catherine of Alexandria is the patron and her feast, on 25 November, is the village's biggest. On 1 and 2 November the dead are honoured with jaripeos, a tianguis, fireworks and brass-band music.

Around town there are hills shaped like an eagle (Pilatán, Santa Cruz and Tacaballo), the Pichingo caves, a waterfall at Cuatetla and the Claro and Tamala rivers. On the table you find zacahuil, piloncillo palanquetas with walnuts and peanuts, and cane aguardiente. Market days are Friday and Saturday in town.
