About Coacuilco

In Nahuatl, Coacuilco means "place of the painted snake". The village is in the Hidalgo Huasteca, in the municipality of Huejutla de Reyes, at 338 metres above sea level and about 18.5 km southwest of the municipal seat, according to Wikipedia. The terrain is mountain and hill country in the Huasteca karst of the Sierra Madre Oriental, and the water runs to the Tempoal river, part of the Moctezuma basin. The climate is semi-warm and humid, with rain all year.

With 3,369 people in 1,025 homes (INEGI 2020), which is 2.7% of the municipal population. A 1999 photograph uploaded to Wikimedia Commons shows its bandstand.

Social life in the region revolves around Xantolo, the Huasteca Day of the Dead, which in Huejutla is scheduled for 30 October to 2 November 2026 with a monumental altar in Plaza 21 de Mayo. Anyone visiting Coacuilco on those dates can combine it with the municipal seat, about 18 km away.
