About Huichapa
Huichapa was founded between 1850 and 1860, with no exact date on record. It stands at 159 metres in the Hidalgo Huasteca, ringed by hills, and Wikipedia lists Vinazco, La Capilla, El Chote, Matachilillo, Orizatlán, Jaltocán and Huejutla among its closest neighbours. The 2020 census recorded 163 people, 1.55% of Jaltocán municipality.
The centre has a boulevard running from the plaza to a park with a bandstand, and Wikimedia Commons photographs from 2019 to 2021 show the bandstand, the sign at the entrance to the centre and an aerial view of the houses. The climate is temperate and sub-humid with summer rain, and local water runs to the Tempoal River sub-basin.
Village life follows the Catholic calendar: Holy Week and Christmas are the main feasts, and the so-called Fiesta del recuerdo gathers families to raise money for the church. On 1 and 2 November, at Xantolo, offerings to the dead are set out with flower altars and food. The Huasteca table in Huichapa runs to tamales, zacahuil, enchiladas, cured beef, bocoles, mole, chocolate and bread.
Jaltocán municipality, whose Nahuatl name is read as 'place of sandy ground', grows coffee on 458 hectares, along with maize and beans.
How to get to Huichapa
Huichapa is in Jaltocán municipality, in the Hidalgo Huasteca, about 4 km from the village of Jaltocán according to PueblosAmérica. The reference city is Huejutla de Reyes: ADO runs about 5 daily buses from Pachuca to Huejutla, about 4 h 20 min according to Rome2rio's listing; by car it is about 3 h 15 min (roughly 207 km). Jaltocán and Huejutla are the nearest reference towns. In a straight line Huichapa is about 56 km from Xilitla (approx. 65 minutes) and about 106 km from Ciudad Valles (approx. 2 hours).
