About Acuatempa
Acuatempa comes from Nahuatl and means "on the shore of good water". It lies in the Huasteca Hidalguense, only 255 metres above sea level, a sharp contrast with the rest of Hidalgo: the climate is warm and humid, with rain all year, and the terrain is sierra within the Carso Huasteco. Water here drains toward the Los Hules sub-basin, in the Moctezuma basin.
It belongs to the municipality of Huejutla de Reyes, whose name means "place where willows abound". In 2020 the community had 966 people, under 1% of the municipality; its population nearly doubled between 1970 (443) and 2000 (893) and has held around 970 since 2010. In Huejutla, coffee covers about 2,440 hectares and maize 14,234, with beans, tomato and chile too; in some communities honey and beeswax are collected.
The river that bears its name, the Río de Acuatempa, is the subject of this page's photo. At 255 metres and with rain in every month, the vegetation and the flow are what set this corner apart from the rest of the state.
How to get to Acuatempa
Acuatempa is in the municipality of Huejutla de Reyes, in the north-eastern corner of Hidalgo. In a straight line Metztitlán is about 62 km away and Pachuca about 110 km, an estimated 70 and 125 minutes' drive; the real road distance is considerably longer because you must go around the sierra, so these are calculated figures, not measured times. There is no published road itinerary or bus line for the community: the most practical way is to reach Huejutla de Reyes, the municipal seat, and ask there about transport or the road to Acuatempa. Since it rains all year here, bring shoes for mud.
