Pepeyocatitla

Pepeyocatitla sounds like jewellery, and the name is just that: from Nahuatl pepeyoca, "to shine", and pepeyoctli, the trinket worn around the neck, it reads "place where pendants or jewels are worn at the neck". It lies in Hidalgo's Huasteca at only 229 metres above sea level, within the Carso Huasteco sierra and the Los Hules sub-basin. The climate is warm all year with heavy rain: around 23 °C on average and over 1,700 mm of rain annually.

In 2020 it had 1,082 residents, nearly all of them (99.6%) identifying as Indigenous, and three in four speak an Indigenous language, which in the municipality is mostly Huasteca Nahuatl. More than 97% of homes have piped water and a toilet. Yahualica municipality, whose name means "house of mist", lives off maize, beans, coffee, oranges, sugar cane and lemons.

The nearby landscape is one of full summer rivers and low hills: a photograph of the village shows the Atempa river running between Pepeyocatitla and El Arenal, which is just over a kilometre away, and the hills Teyacaza (432 m), Nicequitl (454 m) and Tlatlapaya (773 m) stand around it. The closest neighbours are Huitznopala, Olma and Mecatlán, all within 2.5 km.
