About Tenamaxtepec

Tenamaxtepec is one of the larger localities in the municipality of Yahualica, with 856 residents in 2020 (3.47% of the municipality). It has grown quickly: 480 people in 2000, 648 in 2005 and 775 in 2010. It sits at 674 metres in the Hidalgo Huasteca, on sierra terrain of the Carso Huasteco and in the Calabozo river subbasin.

The climate is warm-humid with rain all year. Across the municipality the mean annual temperature is 20 °C and close to 1,900 mm of rain falls, under a cover of medium-height tropical forest where squirrel, rabbit, deer and rattlesnake live. The language of the area is Huasteca Nahuatl, spoken by nearly eight in ten people in Yahualica.

A Wikimedia Commons photograph taken here shows handmade tortillas, a household craft that is still alive in the region. Yahualica, whose Nahuatl name means "house of mist", celebrates Xantolo, the Huasteca Day of the Dead, with activities in the municipality's communities. Tenamaxtepec is a place to see everyday life in the Nahua sierra, with no monuments or tourist services.

How to get to Tenamaxtepec

Drive from Tuxpan: 2 h 45 min, 150 km

Tenamaxtepec belongs to the municipality of Yahualica, in northern Hidalgo, in the Huasteca. In a straight line Metztitlán is about 53 km away and Tulancingo about 89 km (at least roughly 60 and 100 minutes by road).

The practical reference point is Yahualica, the municipal seat, which has its own town hall (yahualicahgo.gob.mx) and is where to ask about the road and transport out to the village. That route crosses sierra terrain with rain at any time of year, so start early and ask in the seat about the state of the road.
