About Texoloc

Texoloc takes its name from Nahuatl texolotl, the tejolote: the long stone, shaped like the hand of a mortar, that is used to grind chile in a molcajete. The community belongs to the Huasteca hidalguense, in the municipality of Xochiatipan, and sits at 414 metres above sea level on hilly ground of the Sierra Madre Oriental (the Carso Huasteco subprovince).

Water from these slopes drains into the Calabozo sub-basin, part of the Moctezuma basin and the Pánuco region. The climate is semi-warm and humid with rain spread across the whole year.

The 2020 census counted 842 residents, 4.61% of the whole municipality. The number has a long history behind it: 220 people in 1900, 478 in 1950, more than 900 by 1990, a peak of 1,028 in 1995, then a decline to today's figure. The municipal seat, Xochiatipan, lies at 649 metres and has 1,593 inhabitants.

It should not be confused with San Damián Texoloc in Tlaxcala, a different town with its own church.

How to get to Texoloc

Texoloc lies in the Xochiatipan hills of the Huasteca of Hidalgo, about 93 km in a straight line from Tulancingo (roughly 105 minutes by our estimate, likely longer on mountain curves) and about 65 km from Metztitlán. The real journey depends on the state road to Xochiatipan and on local tracks, whose condition changes with the rain that falls here all year.

The practical approach is to reach the municipal seat, Xochiatipan, first and ask there about local transport or a shared taxi to the community. Carry cash, water and rain gear, and set out early so you are not driving a mountain road after dark.
