Presa La Muñeca

Lake 10 km southeast of Tierranueva

A reservoir on the Jofre River where the bell tower of a drowned chapel rises from the water; fishing and boat rides.

Presa La Muñeca is a reservoir on the Jofre River, a short drive southeast of Tierra Nueva, set among the dry hills and scrub of the potosino semi-desert. It is the town's best-known sight because of what lies beneath it.

The original settlement, founded in 1712 as San Nicolás de Tierranueva del Río de Jofre, stood in the river valley. When the dam was built and began holding water around 1970, the old site was flooded, and the chapel of the Señor de la Piedad went under. Its bell tower, about 10 meters tall, still rises from the middle of the reservoir, and how much of it shows depends on the water level.

Today La Muñeca is a place for fishing, boat rides and quiet afternoons by the water. The town holds a fishing tournament on the reservoir, usually in April, and the banks of the Jofre River are good for a walk.

What to see and do

Look for the bell tower of the drowned Señor de la Piedad chapel in the middle of the water.
Take a boat ride out toward the tower when boats are available.
Fish from the shore; ask locally about the April tournament.
Walk along the Jofre River and watch the sunset over the semi-desert hills.

Getting there

The reservoir is about 6 kilometers from the center of Tierra Nueva, around 10 minutes by car on local roads heading southeast. There is no regular public transport; a taxi from town is the easy option.
