Landmark 22 km north of Comonfort
A small, organic-minded family winery on the San Miguel–Querétaro road, with tours, tastings and a restaurant.
Dos Búhos is one of the pioneering boutique wineries of the San Miguel de Allende area, set on a small ranch called Santa Gloria along the highway to Querétaro. Its vineyard covers only a few hectares, and the family that runs it has made a point of farming organically and fermenting with natural yeasts, then aging the wine in French oak. The varieties include Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and the aromatic Moscato Giallo.
The winery has an artistic streak. Its founders include painter Diana Maycotte, the labels are designed as small artworks, and the fermentation hall doubles as a gallery-like space. Visits usually combine a walk through the vines and the production area with a tasting, and the winery has added a restaurant where you can stay for lunch with a bottle from the cellar.
Guanajuato's wine country is young, and it produces lighter, medium-bodied wines shaped by the semi-desert highlands. Dos Búhos is a good place to understand that style, in a relaxed setting just a short drive from Comonfort.
