About San Miguel de Allende
San Miguel de Allende is a colonial town on a hillside in eastern Guanajuato, known for its cobbled lanes, houses painted ochre, orange and yellow, and the pink spires of its parish church, La Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel. The church itself dates from the 17th century, but its neo-Gothic façade was added in the 1880s by Zeferino Gutiérrez, a self-taught local mason said to have worked from postcards of European cathedrals. It faces the Jardín Allende, the shady main square where the town gathers.
The town was refounded in 1555 as a mission and military post on the silver road between Zacatecas and Mexico City, and grew rich supplying travellers and mining camps; most of its mansions and churches were built in the mid-18th century. It was the home of Ignacio Allende and Juan Aldama, conspirators of the 1810 independence movement, and Hidalgo's insurgent army passed through right after the Grito de Dolores. In 1826 the town took Allende's name.
After decades of decline, San Miguel was revived as an art colony: the Escuela de Bellas Artes opened in a former convent in 1938, and after World War II American veterans came to study on the G.I. Bill. Many foreigners, mostly retirees from the United States and Canada, have settled here since, and the centre is full of galleries, restaurants, language schools and boutique hotels. In 2008 UNESCO listed the historic centre together with the Sanctuary of Atotonilco, about 14 km away, as a World Heritage Site.
The historic core is compact and best explored on foot, but streets are steep and uneven. Expect crowds and higher prices on holiday weekends and during the big festivals.
