Landmark 27 km west of Bernal
A big new wine estate on an old hacienda, with theatrical vineyard tours by ATV and bottle-your-own wine.
Puerta del Lobo is one of the newest and most ambitious wine estates in Querétaro, in the countryside of El Marqués, west of Bernal toward the state capital. It was founded in 2014 on the grounds of an old hacienda from around 1800, whose Chapel of the Rosary is the last original building still standing.
The property covers about 160 hectares, with roughly 28 of them planted with vines, and it was designed as a full wine park rather than just a cellar: there are restaurants, a wine bar with panoramic views and places to stay among the vineyards. The winery has quickly built a reputation among the new generation of Querétaro producers.
Its tours are more theatrical than most. Visitors ride through the vineyard in all-terrain vehicles while actors tell the history of the region, then go down to the cellar to learn how the wine is made, and can even bottle and label a wine of their own to take home.
