    About Rincón del Cano

    Rincón del Cano sits in the hills of Tierra Blanca at roughly 1,900 metres, with 1,716 inhabitants in 2020. Residents say the place used to be called Rincón de Agua Salada and was renamed because it belonged to the Cano group; the community split from Fracción del Cano in 1942. It recognises itself as an Otomí indigenous community and belongs to the Otomí congregation of San Ildefonso de Cieneguilla.

    Local memory holds exact dates: clandestine Masses during the Cristero War, 1925 to 1928; a fifteen-day cyclone in 1936; the primary school in 1955; the state road from San José to Tierra Blanca in 1964; electricity in 1984 and the drinking-water well in 1985. Celebrations began in the chapel of the Divino Salvador in 1917, and the Mezquital chapel was founded in 1920. The sacred places are the oratory of the Santa Cruz and the chapel, looked after by mayordomos.

    Life follows the maize and bean cycle. The year opens with the blessing of the seed; Holy Week includes a passion play; in May the community honours San Isidro and the Santa Cruz with a vigil, Mass, dawn fireworks and dance; in August, the Virgen de la Asunción; in November, Day of the Dead with altars and a cemetery visit; and in December, the Virgen de Guadalupe with rosary, dance and flower offerings. Local crafts include embroidered napkins, palm hats and braids, tule chairs, thread rebozos, henequen scrubbers, flutes and wooden yokes for ploughs. This is a working community, not a place set up for tourists.

    How to get to Rincón del Cano

    Drive from San Luis de la Paz: 1 h 5 min, 67 km

    Rincón del Cano lies on the state road linking Tierra Blanca with San José Iturbide, the road the community remembers being built in 1964. From Tierra Blanca it is about 10 km along that road, passing El Capulín; from San José Iturbide you take federal 57 and then the bypass toward Tierra Blanca, and the route passes Ex Hacienda de Guadalupe, Los Encinos, Villa El Capulín, Carbajal and El Derramadero before reaching Rincón del Cano. There is a sharp bend in the community where a truck overturned in July 2026; slow down.

    There is no bus or combi route to Rincón del Cano with published times. The practical way is to reach Tierra Blanca or San José Iturbide by bus and ask there about local transport. From Querétaro it is about 54 km as the crow flies, roughly an hour by car; Mineral de Pozos is about 32 km away, roughly 35 minutes.
