About Tarandacuao
Tarandacuao means "the place where water enters" in Purépecha, and the name makes sense on arrival: the Lerma River crosses the municipality just below the Solís dam, and east of the seat springs rise that feed the best known of them, the Ojo de Agua. The town existed before the conquest; Franciscans put Santiago in front of its name, its legal founding is dated 27 April 1612, and an 1861 decree added "de la Constancia". Local tradition says that on Tuesday 23 October 1810 part of Hidalgo's insurgent army stopped to eat beside the spring on its way to Maravatío.
The Ojo de Agua is still the heart of the place: a turquoise-water swimming spot in the very middle of town, shaded by ahuehuete trees, with gardens, grills and changing rooms. It also supplies drinking water to much of the population and irrigates the fields that run down to the Lerma. A few blocks away the church of Santiago Apóstol, built of quarried stone in neoclassical style in the early 1800s, has a Latin-cross nave and a three-tier tower with a clock on every face. The churchyard has planters, a small open-air theatre and an arch opened in 1935, facing Jardín Hidalgo. The town also has the Casa de la Cultura with ten workshops, the Santuario de Guadalupe and a stone bridge.
With about 5,650 residents at 1,942 metres, Tarandacuao has been shrinking since 1990, when it had around 6,900: many young people leave for the United States, mostly Rogers, Arkansas, and Brentwood, California. The climate is semi-warm, with summer rain and an annual mean near 19 degrees.
