About Atlacomulco de Fabela

Atlacomulco de Fabela heads the municipality of Atlacomulco, up in the northwest of the State of Mexico at roughly 2,580 m. It had 23,219 residents in 2020, and the whole municipality 109,384. It is the commercial, cattle and industrial hub of this corner of the state: people from the surrounding Mazahua and Otomí communities come in to shop, and a traditional tianguis sets up in the centre at weekends. The Nahuatl name reads as "place among water wells"; the Mazahua and Otomí called it Mbaro and Mbado, "red stone", after the red tezontle quarried nearby. Farmland around town grows alfalfa for cattle and maize, plus peaches, strawberries, capulín cherries and plums.

The centre is easy to cover on foot. The 17th-century parish church of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe has a plateresque front and a painting of the Assumption in its dome. The Centro Cultural Isidro Fabela occupies the house of the writer, diplomat and state governor (1942-1945) born in the municipality, with a library and rooms for temporary exhibitions. A short way from the centre stands the Santuario del Señor del Huerto, a small pink-quarry-stone church crowded with ex-votos and folk-painted retablos; its feast falls in the third week of September, with pilgrimages, dances, regional food and fireworks. For some open air, the Parque Recreativo Las Fuentes has natural springs, and Parque Isla de las Aves, beside a reservoir a few kilometres out, offers canoeing, fishing and grills.

Local treats include the Medrano ice creams, made with fresh fruit, and wood-oven bread, above all the aniseed cocoles. The Feria de Atlacomulco is held in September with concerts, rodeos and livestock shows; in 2025 it ran from the 12th to the 22nd with free entry.
