About San Felipe del Progreso
San Felipe del Progreso is the seat of the municipality of the same name in the northwest of the State of Mexico, above 2,500 metres in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. INEGI counted 5,280 people in the town in 2020. This is Mazahua land: Franciscans founded the town under the patronage of Saint Philip the Apostle around 1552, and "del Progreso" was added in the 19th century. The old Mexico City-Morelia road ran through here, and municipal history says Miguel Hidalgo reached San Felipe on the morning of 27 October 1810. The state named it a Pueblo con Encanto on 6 September 2021.
January is the time to come, for the feast of Nuestro Padre Jesús. It is more than 300 years old and known for ornaments made of popped corn (stars, crowns and rosaries) that frame the image's niche in the procession; each mayordomía pops the kernels in clay pots over sand from the cornfield. Before the feast a pilgrimage walks to the Basilica of Guadalupe in the capital to have the candle wax blessed that will light the shrine all year, and there is the dance of Charlemagne and the 12 Peers of France and a night of fireworks castles.
Beyond the centre are the Tepetitlán dam, with its old hacienda and its fried charales, the Centro Ceremonial Mazahua, an open-air mosaic gallery in Estutempan and the Municipal Museum. Workshops embroider wool quexquémetls and make vests, ruanas and wrought-iron pieces; at the table you will find turkey barbacoa, turkey mole, cachetadas and pulque.
How to get to San Felipe del Progreso
Drive from Toluca: 1 h 5 min, 70 km
San Felipe del Progreso is 56 km from Toluca by way of Ixtlahuaca, or 72 km via Atlacomulco (Wikipedia, citing the municipal monograph). A TolucalaBellaCd guide puts it at 1 h 22 min from Toluca and 2 h 40 min from Mexico City. From CDMX the usual way is to reach Toluca first, continue toward Ixtlahuaca and then on to San Felipe; the stretch from Ixtlahuaca crosses the Mazahua valley.
By bus, the logical route is to reach the Toluca terminal and look for service toward Ixtlahuaca or San Felipe del Progreso, with combis and taxis for the last stretch; there is no published published timetable, so confirm times at the ticket window. The nearest Pueblo con Encanto is El Oro, about 21 km in a straight line; by road it is further, so expect more than the 25-minute estimate. In town, the centre is walkable.
