Archaeological site 18 km south of Aculco
Hilltop Otomí ceremonial center from around 900–1300 AD, with temple platforms and wide views over the Acambay valley.
Huamango sits on a high plateau about 4 km northwest of Acambay, close to 2,850 meters above sea level, and it is one of the few archaeological sites tied directly to the Otomí people who still live in this part of the State of Mexico. It was occupied roughly between 900 and 1300 AD, in the centuries when Tula was the great power to the northeast, and it probably served as a regional capital.
The builders leveled the uneven hilltop into broad terraces and set their buildings on them: a two-level palace with a central stairway and small rooms where incense was burned, a stepped temple, an altar, and residential platforms around patios. Stretches of defensive wall show that the site's position, watching over the valley and the trade routes through it, mattered as much as its religious role. The structures were excavated in the 1970s by Román Piña Chán and William Folan.
Today the visit is short and uncrowded. The real pleasure is the setting: open sky, pine-dotted hills, and long views across the valley that explain why the Otomí chose this spot.
