About Exhacienda de Solís

Solís was Temascalcingo's biggest hacienda by land and output. Its boom came in the 18th century, when the Tlalpujahua and El Oro mines and Mexico City wanted ever more grain, and the Enciclopedia de los Municipios says it ran the area's economy and social life from 1540 to 1940. Today it is a locality of 2,051 people (2020) at about 2,377 m in the wide Solís valley; in 1900 it had 2,605 and in 1921 only 452, a fall that coincides with the Revolution and the agrarian revolt that destroyed the hacienda.

It also played a part in the War of Independence: after Hidalgo's death, Ignacio López Rayón took the hacienda as his operations centre and ran it until farm output flourished; from here he visited the Ñado fort and the Huichapan region. The Enciclopedia adds that the insurgent cause in the area had determined women, among them Leona Vicario at Tlalpujahua and at Solís.

Of the main house there remain an entrance garden, courtyards with arches and the chapel of San Miguel Arcángel; a blogger who visited calls it restored. Since November 1991 the compound has housed a technical high school (the CBT Lic. Adolfo López Mateos), so it is not a museum and no visiting hours are published: ask at the gate.
