About San Miguel Tenochtitlán

San Miguel Tenochtitlán is the main village of the western zone of the municipality of Jocotitlán, in the State of Mexico. It has nothing to do with Mexico City: this is a Mazahua village among low hills at 2,553 m above sea level. INEGI counted 6,660 people in 2020, making it the municipality's third-largest locality, up from just 749 in 1910; the big jump came between 1960 and 1980, from 1,082 to 3,504. The name pairs the patron saint, the archangel Michael, with a Nahuatl word usually read as "land of Lord Tenoch".

Mazahua traditions are stronger here than in the municipal seat, along with Santiago Casandejé, Citendeje, Coajomulco and Concepción Caro; those communities are known for traditional music, wool textiles and ceramics, and San Miguel is listed among the municipality's pottery villages. Another local mark is its artisanal ice creams (nieves artesanales), which is how Spanish Wikipedia describes the place. In Holy Week the Passion is staged with live actors, as in Santiago Yeche, Endaré and Los Reyes. The village has its church of San Miguel Arcángel, a library and a cultural centre, plus an Evangelical community inside a mostly Catholic population.
