About Pisté
Pisté, officially Pisté de Chichén Itzá, is the town right next to the Chichén Itzá archaeological site, in the municipality of Tinum in eastern Yucatán. It strings along Federal Highway 180, about 125 km east of Mérida and some 40 to 45 km west of Valladolid, and the Kantunil–Cancún toll road links it to Cancún. It is the largest locality in the municipality and its economic centre, far bigger than the municipal seat, Tinum.
That growth is recent and almost entirely tied to tourism. Pisté had 85 inhabitants in 1900 and fewer than a thousand in 1960; it reached 3,124 in 1990 and 6,496 in the 2020 census, as hotels, restaurants and services for the visitors to Chichén Itzá multiplied. Many families make a living selling crafts: around a thousand artisans work inside the archaeological zone, and in 2026 the authorities announced a new visitor centre and craft market on the Pisté–Xcalacoop road just outside the site, a move the vendors have resisted.
For travellers, Pisté is mainly a base. Staying the night lets you be at the gates of Chichén Itzá when they open, before the tour buses from Cancún and Mérida arrive. The town is easy to walk, with simple hotels and family-run restaurants along the main road, larger hotels with pools on its edges, and mototaxis for short hops. The Ik Kil cenote and the Balankanché caves are a few kilometres away.
