Texán Cámara

San Antonio Texán Cámara, usually just Texán Cámara, is a comisaría of Mérida about 22 km south of the city, on the southern boundary of the Cuxtal Reserve, the area that protects woodland and groundwater for the capital. Petac and San Antonio Tzacalá lie further south. It had 664 residents in 2020, against 483 in 2005. The name joins the Maya Texán, "over there in the huano", the palm used to thatch traditional houses, with Cámara, the surname of the hacienda's owner.

The settlement began as a henequen estate, and its best years matched those of the "green gold". Tokens from 1888, worth a quarter and half a real, survive with the words ficha convencional para las fincas de C. Cámara; they show the estate belonged to Camilo Cámara, and today they are prized for their design.

The old hacienda entrance keeps an iron gate between two tall orange and white pillars set into a dry-stone wall, with gardens behind. Around it the village has a yellow comisaría building with a porch, a church with a plain bell gable, a kindergarten, a primary school with a canteen, a park and a sports field. On a loop through the south of the municipality you can add Yaxnic, whose restored hacienda takes day visitors, and Dzoyaxché.
