About Ticimul

Ticimul (pronounced 'Tikimul') is a village in the municipality of Umán, about 7 km east of the city of Umán and some 12 km south-west of central Mérida, both in a straight line. It is not to be confused with the Ticimul in the municipality of Chankom, in eastern Yucatán. The village had 1,002 people at the 2020 census, making it one of the larger comisarías of Umán; a century earlier, in 1910, it had 251.

Ticimul grew around a henequen hacienda. Its old buildings still stand in the village: a plain square building with a tall brick chimney behind it, now fenced, and a two-storey building with arched openings, partly ruined and overgrown. The population has grown steadily, from about 200 people in the mid-20th century to 663 in 2000 and 929 in 2010.

The main sight is the church, painted pink and white, with a stepped bell gable holding three bells and a small arcade along one side. Ticimul has no visitor services; it is a short detour for anyone exploring the old hacienda villages around Umán, such as Tanil and Xcucul Sur nearby.
