About Hunxectamán

Hunxectamán is a small comisaría of Umán that lies just 3 km north-north-east of the town centre, with downtown Mérida about 13 km away to the north-east in a straight line. Don't mix it up with the other Hacienda Hunxectamán, which sits in the Cuxtal reserve on Mérida's southern side. The village counted 250 residents in 2005 and 337 in the 2020 census.

In Yucatec Maya the name is generally taken to mean 'a flock of sheep': hun is one, xec a group and tamán sheep. The place was a hacienda, as were most estates around Mérida, and from 1937 its land was turned into an ejido under the agrarian reform decrees of President Lázaro Cárdenas. The core buildings, known as the casco, remained privately owned.

The estate looked well cared for in photos taken in 2012, with a red arched gateway closed by an iron gate, a drive lined with palms, and a long red main house with arcades standing on a lawn. Sections of old dry-stone wall survive along the street. Since it is private and does not open to visitors on a regular basis, enjoy it from the road while touring Umán's haciendas. Umán, 3 km away, has shops and food, and its 18th-century church and old convent of San Francisco de Asís deserve a stop.
