Oxholón

Oxholón lies 6 km west of the town of Umán, to whose municipality it belongs, and roughly 22 km west-south-west of downtown Mérida as the crow flies. Its neighbour Dzibikak, home to a restored hacienda, is about 3 km north. Numbers have climbed from 105 residents in 1900 to 797 in 2005 and 950 in 2020.

The name is Yucatec Maya, and census takers have spelled it many ways over the years: Oxlohom up to 1910, then Oxholón, Ox-Holom in 1921, Oxholom in 1930, Oxlon in 1990 and Oxholón once more from 2000. Spanish Wikipedia adds another variant, Oxlohón. The settlement formed around a hacienda, which puts it on the list of Yucatecan haciendas.

What sets Oxholón apart is that its hacienda, unlike the restored estates around it, has mostly fallen into ruin. Pictures from 2012 show tall stone gate pillars half hidden under creepers, broken masonry walls beside the road and a two-storey stone house topped with crenellated parapets. A plain, pale church with a small bell gable faces the street. Nothing here is set up for visitors, so treat it as a short, quiet stop on a tour of Umán's old henequen haciendas; Umán, 6 km east, has shops and food.
