Bolón

Bolón is a village in the municipality of Umán, about 9 km west-south-west of the city of Umán in a straight line. With 1,489 people at the 2020 census it is one of the largest places in the municipality after the seat, and it has grown steadily from 308 inhabitants in 1900 and 1,113 in 2000.

Bolón was already a town in its own right in the early 19th century, and it moved between districts more than once: records place it under the Hunucmá district in the 1830s and show it passing to the municipality of Maxcanú in 1840, before it ended up as part of Umán. It is also one of the places in the municipality where Maya archaeological remains are found, together with the seat of Umán, Hotzuc and Kizil.

The village's landmark is its church, an old stone building with a tall stepped bell gable on the front, now covered by a newer arched roof; parts of older stone walls and a tower stand near it among the trees. Around it, Bolón is a working village with its comisaría building on the main street. It has no visitor services, but it makes an easy stop on a loop through the old hacienda villages west of Umán, such as Oxholón, Dzibikak and San Antonio Chun.
