    About Sac Nicté

    Sac Nicté is a tiny settlement in the municipality of Umán, about 7.5 km west of the city of Umán and 2.5 km west of Dzibikak, both in a straight line. Only a couple of dozen people live here: censuses counted between 21 and 30 inhabitants from 1990 to 2005. Its Maya name means 'white flower', the name of a princess in a Maya legend. It is not to be confused with the Sac Nicté in the municipality of Mérida.

    The place grew up as a henequen hacienda and did well during the henequen boom. In 1882 it shared an owner with neighbouring Dzibikak, and later it belonged to Olegario and José Trinidad Molina Solís, as the hacienda's tokens show. These fichas are prized by collectors for their design: the Sac Nicté pieces carry the name SACNICTE around a monogram on one side and a pattern of flowers on the other.

    What is left of the hacienda is in ruins and overgrown by trees: a row of stone arches, roofless rooms with columns and tall walls with empty windows, among rubble and grass. It is a place for people who like to see the henequen era as it was left, not a restored hacienda; there are no services, and the ruins stand on land that is not a public site, so look from the road or ask locally before walking in.

    Drive from Mérida: 30 min, 25 km

    From Mérida take Federal Highway 180 south-west to Umán (about 18 km). Sac Nicté lies about 7.5 km west of Umán's centre and 2.5 km west of Dzibikak in a straight line, reached by local roads; check a map app for the current route.
