Waterfall 7 km northeast of Chiapa de Corzo
A waterfall that pours straight out of a cave into turquoise pools, with caving and rappelling trips into the mountain.
El Chorreadero is a small park in the hills a few kilometers northeast of Chiapa de Corzo, near the road that climbs toward San Cristóbal. Its waterfall is unusual: a stream runs underground through the mountain, comes out of the mouth of a cave, and slides some 25 meters down a rock face into a chain of clear blue-green pools.
Most visitors come for an easy morning of swimming in the pools and walking up to the cave entrance. The site has a restaurant, cabins, a camping area and parking, and it is popular with families from Tuxtla on weekends.
The cave behind the waterfall is also one of the best-known caving routes in Chiapas. With a local guide you can go inside the mountain, wading, swimming and rappelling through the underground river; longer trips cross the whole cave system and take most of a day. These are real adventure outings, so go with an experienced operator and the right gear.
What to see and do
Swim in the pools below the waterfall.
Climb up to the cave mouth where the water comes out of the mountain.
Book a guided caving trip through the underground river, from a short taste to a full-day crossing.
Visit in the dry season, roughly November to March, when the water is clearer and the cave trips are safer.
