About Arena México

Arena México, in Colonia Doctores just south of the city centre, is known as the Cathedral of Lucha Libre and is the home of the Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL). The site was first the Arena Modelo, a boxing hall where Salvador Lutteroth began staging wrestling on 21 September 1933. Lutteroth built the present arena, which opened on 27 April 1956 and was the largest ever built specifically for wrestling, with room for about 16,500 people.

It has hosted more than wrestling. During the 1968 Olympics it held the boxing tournament under the name Arena 68, and Mexico won two golds and two bronzes in its ring. Singers such as Juan Gabriel and Luis Miguel have played here, and for generations of city families the arena meant winter and summer seasons of circus and Holiday on Ice. But lucha libre is the reason to come: masked técnicos and rudos, acrobatic dives over the ropes, women's and men's title fights, and an audience that heckles and cheers as loudly as the wrestlers perform. CMLL's big anniversary shows have been staged here every year since it opened.

There are regular cards three times a week. Friday's Viernes Espectacular is the flagship show and the busiest; Tuesday's Martes Populares is cheaper with a rowdier local crowd; and the Sunday afternoon Domingo Familiar suits children and an earlier night. A full card runs about two and a half to three hours. Tickets are sold on Ticketmaster and at the box offices on Calle Doctor Lavista, which open on show days, and stalls outside sell wrestling masks for less than inside. Vendors walk the stands with beer, micheladas and snacks, so bring small notes.
