About Paseo de la Reforma
Paseo de la Reforma is Mexico City's grand diagonal avenue, about 14.7 km long, running from Santa Fe and Lomas de Chapultepec in the west, through Chapultepec Park, past the Zona Rosa and Colonia Juárez to the edge of the historic center, and on north to Tlatelolco. Its classic stretch, the one people mean when they say Reforma, is the tree-lined section between Chapultepec and the old Caballito roundabout, lined with monuments, hotels and the city's tallest towers.
It began as an imperial whim. In 1864 Emperor Maximilian had Austrian engineers lay out a European-style boulevard from the city's edge to his residence at Chapultepec Castle and named it Paseo de la Emperatriz after Carlota. After the empire fell, the road opened to the public in 1867 and in 1872 took the name of the liberal Reform. Porfirio Díaz turned it into an open-air history book, with statues of liberal heroes along its sides and monuments in the great roundabouts, the glorietas: the Monument to Cuauhtémoc at Insurgentes, the Ángel de la Independencia of 1910, and later the Diana Cazadora fountain of 1942. The glorietas keep changing: Columbus's statue was taken down in 2020 and an anti-monument now stands in its place, and in 2022 the century-old palm in the Glorieta de la Palma died and was replaced by an ahuehuete tree, giving the roundabout its new name.
The skyline came later. Torre Mayor, 225 meters tall and finished in 2003 on the site of the old Cine Chapultepec, was the tallest building in Latin America until 2010 and was designed to ride out very strong earthquakes; Torre Reforma, at 244 meters, now tops it nearby. Since 2018 the Paseo de las Heroínas has added statues of notable Mexican women between the Diana and the Estela de Luz. The best time to know Reforma is a Sunday morning: since May 2007 the Muévete en Bici program closes it to cars so that families, cyclists, skaters and runners can take over the lanes, and Metrobús Line 7 runs along it the rest of the week.
