About Tianguis de La Lagunilla

La Lagunilla is a market district just north of the Centro Histórico, a few blocks from Plaza Garibaldi, and on Sundays it hosts Mexico City's most famous antiques and flea market. The name, 'the little lagoon', recalls the stretch of water linked to Lake Texcoco where canoes once docked with goods for the great market of Tlatelolco. In colonial times the plaza of the Santa Catarina church held one of the city's main tianguis, and the area inherited the baratillo tradition of secondhand goods after vendors were pushed out of the Zócalo in the 17th century. The fixed market halls of today, for new clothes, fabrics, furniture and food, were built in the 1950s to a design by Pedro Ramírez Vázquez.

On Sundays the antiques section takes over Comonfort, Allende, Rayón and Matamoros streets. Stalls pile up old books and magazines, comics, coins, postcards, vinyl records, film posters, cameras, dial telephones, candelabras, silverware, jewellery, masks and furniture; tin toys are among the most sought-after pieces. Writers and collectors have long hunted here: Carlos Monsiváis found part of the collection now in the Museo del Estanquillo at La Lagunilla, and engineer Guillermo González Camarena is said to have bought parts for his first television camera in its stalls. Bargaining is part of the game, and the vendors' stories about each piece are part of the fun.

Around the antiques, the wider Sunday tianguis sells vintage and secondhand clothing, new fashion, wedding, quinceañera and charro outfits from the covered market, and fabric by the metre. Micheladas are the drink of the day, and the San Camilito food market serves carnitas, birria and pozole. Come early for the best selection; the antiques stalls pack up by mid-afternoon. To the east the market merges into Tepito, so stay around the antiques streets near Comonfort.

Take the Metro: Lagunilla station on Line B and Garibaldi/Lagunilla, a transfer station on Lines 8 and B, are the closest. The antiques stalls start on Comonfort, between Paseo de la Reforma and Matamoros. Parking is scarce and streets around the market are clogged with stalls on Sundays, so leave the car behind.
