About Tlatelolco

Tlatelolco was Tenochtitlan's twin city. According to the chronicles it was founded in 1338 by a group that split from the Tenochca and settled a little further north on the island, and it stayed independent until 1473, when it lost a war with its neighbour and came under Mexica rule. Its great market became the trading heart of both cities and of the Triple Alliance, fed by the pochteca, long-distance merchants who travelled as far as Soconusco and present-day Nicaragua. In 1521 its warriors held out against Cortés until 13 August, when Cuauhtémoc's defence ended here; a plaque by the church calls it neither a triumph nor a defeat but the painful birth of the mestizo nation.

The archaeological zone, about three kilometres north-west of the Zócalo, has been excavated since 1944. Today 67 pre-Hispanic structures are visible, including the Templo Mayor of Tlatelolco, of which its second building stage survives, the round temple of Ehécatl-Quetzalcóatl, the Calendar Temple with reliefs of the ritual calendar, the Temple of the Paintings with traces of murals, a serpent wall and two skull racks. Right on top of the ceremonial precinct stands the Church of Santiago, built by the Franciscans with stones from the temples and finished in 1609, and beside it the Caja de Agua, the cistern of the Colegio de Santa Cruz, where a fragment of a mural painted in 1536, the first in New Spain, survives.

Around the ruins rise the towers of the Nonoalco Tlatelolco housing estate by Mario Pani, so that the Plaza de las Tres Culturas, opened in 1964, puts the Aztec, colonial and modern city side by side. On 2 October 1968 soldiers and police opened fire on a student rally here, killing dozens of people and probably many more; a 1993 monument remembers them, and the former Foreign Ministry tower is now a UNAM cultural centre with the Memorial del 68. Nearby is David Alfaro Siqueiros's first mural, Cuauhtémoc contra el mito (1944). A walk round the ruins, church and museum is an easy morning.
