About Mercado de La Merced

La Merced is the largest traditional retail food market in Mexico City, a sprawl of covered halls on the eastern edge of the Centro Histórico, in the Venustiano Carranza borough. The neighbourhood has lived from trade since the early colonial years, when merchants from across New Spain unloaded their goods here, and it takes its name from the Mercedarian monastery founded in 1594, of which only the cloister survives. By the late 18th century most of the barrio was one huge open-air market. The first permanent buildings went up on the old monastery grounds in the 1860s, and the main halls that stand today were designed by architect Enrique del Moral in the mid-1950s.

For much of the 20th century La Merced was the city's wholesale hub, until the Central de Abasto in Iztapalapa took over that role in the early 1980s. It has had a hard recent history: fires in 1998, 2013 and on Christmas Eve 2019 gutted large parts of the Nave Mayor, the biggest hall, which the city then demolished and rebuilt. In August 2026 the city delivered new wiring for the Nave Menor, which alone holds some 600 stalls; the whole complex counts several thousand.

A visit is pure sensory overload. The Nave Mayor is given over mostly to fruit and vegetables, with mountains of dried chiles, fresh epazote, wild mushrooms and nopales that vendors strip of spines as you watch; other halls sell meat, sweets, party goods, kitchenware, toys and clothes, and the stalls spill out onto the streets toward the Zócalo. Eating is half the point: look for long blue-corn quesadillas off the comal, with fillings such as huitlacoche and squash blossom, plus tostadas and huaraches. The Mercado de Comidas on Rosario street, a separate building, is the place for sit-down market food. Next door is the Mercado de Sonora, famous for its herbs and witchcraft stalls. Many vendors offer tastings, and some will bargain a little, though prices are fair.

How to get to Mercado de La Merced

Drive from Toluca: 1 h 5 min, 64 km

Metro Line 1 (pink) stops right at the market: Merced station has exits next to the halls and one opening inside a building. Line 1 was fully modernised and reopened along its whole length in November 2025. For the Mercado de Comidas on Rosario street, Candelaria station (Lines 1 and 4) is about as close. From the Zócalo the market is a walk east through busy street stalls. From the TAPO bus terminal, walk to Eje 3 Oriente (Francisco del Paso y Troncoso), take an RTP bus and get off at Eje 1 Sur Topacio–San Pablo, about six minutes' walk from the market.
