About Mercado de Jamaica

The Mercado de Jamaica is Mexico City's great flower market, three big halls filling a block at the corner of Congreso de la Unión and Avenida Morelos, south-east of the Centro Histórico. It was inaugurated on 23 September 1957, part of the same programme that produced the Sonora and La Merced markets, and was one of the first in the city to offer car parking. The setting has deep roots: in Aztec times this was the eastern edge of Tenochtitlan, a zone of chinampas and canoe docks on the water route to the markets, and the canals that survived here were only filled in during the 20th century.

Flowers are the reason to come. More than a thousand stalls sell cut flowers, ready-made arrangements, pots and ornamental plants, some 5,000 varieties brought in from Puebla, Veracruz, Chiapas, Oaxaca, the Estado de México and Michoacán. A large share of the floor is given over to the trucks of growers who sell straight from their vehicles. Florists from all over the city buy here wholesale, and the market trades around the clock, so you can turn up with the early buyers before dawn or come for a late-night bunch of roses.

The aisles have their own personalities: the passage along Guillermo Prieto is known for bold, sculptural arrangements, while the one parallel to Congreso de la Unión keeps to traditional designs and is usually cheaper. In the weeks before Day of the Dead the whole market turns orange with cempasúchil, sold by the pot or bunch, and in December it becomes one of the city's big sellers of Christmas trees and piñatas. Beyond the flowers there are produce and meat stalls, unusual ingredients such as wild mushrooms, a candy section and a food area known for its huaraches, especially the rib (costilla) huaraches from an annex on Guillermo Prieto.
