About Viaducto Piedad

Viaducto Piedad is a colonia in the Iztacalco borough, just south of the historic centre. Its name comes from two things you can barely see now: the Viaducto Miguel Alemán, the expressway opened in 1950, and the old Río de la Piedad, which runs in a culvert beneath that same road. It filled up in the mid-20th century with middle-class families who worked in trade, and it slid into decline in the 1990s.

What draws visitors is the city's second Chinatown. Some of the families from the Barrio Chino on calle de Dolores moved here after the 1985 earthquake and once rents downtown climbed; migrants arriving from the 1990s, and in larger numbers in this century, joined them. Most make their living from food: Chinese restaurants and cafés, minimarkets, laundries and hair salons with Mandarin signs and staff who speak little Spanish. It is a working street, not a staged attraction, and its cafés differ from the buffets on calle de Gante and Dolores in serving fonda-style menus.

Life centres on La Coruña and Camino Santa Anita, with Marcos Carrillo and José María Correa as neighbouring streets. The Chinese cafés serve pork or red-bean steamed buns, dim sum, noodles, ribs and roast duck in canteen-sized portions. La Coruña also hosts street vendors, who since the 1980s have given the avenue the feel of a market. Bring cash, and check first that a place is still open: many closed or changed hours during the pandemic.

How to get to Viaducto Piedad

Drive from Mexico City: 10 min, 6 km

By Metro: Line 2 (Cuatro Caminos–Tasqueña), Viaducto station, on Calzada de Tlalpan. The east-side exit opens onto the Viaducto Piedad area; walk from there toward La Coruña. From the Zócalo it is four stops toward Tasqueña (Pino Suárez, San Antonio Abad, Chabacano, Viaducto); from Tasqueña, two (Xola, Viaducto). The station had partial closures for rehabilitation works in 2026, so check its status before setting out.

By car: aim for the junction of Calzada de Tlalpan and the Viaducto Miguel Alemán, about 3 km from the Centro Histórico; roughly 10 to 20 minutes outside rush hour (aprox.). The colonia is paved city with no dirt stretches; the Metro is the practical choice because La Coruña has street vendors.
