Town 52 km south of El Rosario
A fishing village at Sinaloa's southern tip, on a mangrove estuary with quiet beaches; about an hour south via Escuinapa.
Teacapán is a small fishing village at the very southern tip of Sinaloa, on the border with Nayarit, and it feels a world away from the busy beaches further north. It stands beside the Boca de Teacapán, the mouth of a long estuary that drains two big coastal lagoons, Agua Grande on the Sinaloa side and Agua Brava in Nayarit, into the Pacific. The whole area is part of Marismas Nacionales, one of the largest mangrove wetlands in Mexico.
The coast here is around 40 kilometers of nearly untouched beach, with calm water good for swimming and soft sand that runs for kilometers. Beaches such as La Tambora, Playa Espíritu, Las Lupitas, Las Cabras, and Boca de Teacapán see few visitors outside the holidays.
The classic outing is a boat ride from the village into the estuary, through tunnels of mangroves full of birds and some reptiles. Tours often stop at El Calón, an ancient mound built of shells that rises out of the lagoon, a reminder of the people who lived off these waters long before the Spanish arrived.
