Town 16 km southwest of El Rosario
A fishing village by the mouth of the Baluarte River, with estuaries, mangroves, and lots of waterbirds; on the way to El Caimanero.
Agua Verde is a fishing village of a little over 4,000 people on the coastal plain about 23 kilometers from El Rosario, close to where the Baluarte River reaches the sea. It sits between the river, the estuaries, and the edge of the Caimanero lagoon, so life here revolves around the water, and it is the last town on the road to Playa El Caimanero.
The main draw is nature. The mouth of the Baluarte, where the river spreads out into the Pacific, is a spectacle of birds, and the estuaries and mangroves around the village are good for birdwatching and boat rides. The lagoon and the sea supply shrimp, much of it exported, along with mullet, snook, corvina, mojarra, and snapper, and sport fishing is popular.
Agua Verde also has a sea turtle conservation camp, which protects sea turtle nests on this coast. Its own beach is quiet and calm, a contrast to the busier sands of El Caimanero just down the road.
