A former mezcal hacienda town at the foot of the sierra north of El Rosario, with 19th-century rural architecture and old grinding wheels.
Cacalotán is a small town at the foot of the sierra about 10 kilometers north of El Rosario, by the Pánuco creek, and it grew around a hacienda that made mezcal. The estate was founded in the late 18th century by Ignacio Fletes, a wealthy El Rosario miner who owned several other haciendas in the region. Its fortune came from growing agave, distilling mezcal, and making ixtle, the strong fiber twisted into rope.
The town played a part in the War of Independence: the hacienda sheltered the insurgent colonel José María González de Hermosillo and the priest Francisco de la Parra, and meetings to recruit fighters for the cause were held in a public space known as el cobertizo. After the agrarian reform of the 1930s the landowners lost their estates, and today mango orchards have replaced most of the agave fields.
What remains is a town of 19th-century rural architecture, with the ruins of the hacienda and the old stone grinding wheels used for mezcal. Its strongest tradition is religious: the patron saint festival of San Juan Bautista every June 24.
