Archaeological site 13 km northwest of General Cepeda
Coahuila's largest petroglyph site: about 8,000 carvings on 500-plus rocks in the hills west of General Cepeda. No services.
Narigua is a hamlet in the Sierra El Pinal, west of General Cepeda, and the hillside above it holds the largest concentration of rock carvings in Coahuila. INAH archaeologists have recorded about 8,000 petroglyphs spread over more than 500 rocks along roughly half a kilometer, and some are thought to be around 6,000 years old.
The carvings were left by hunter-gatherer peoples of the desert. You can make out spirals that look like snails, zigzag lines, deer tracks, hands, human figures, and shapes that seem to show the sun and the moon. Researchers think they may relate to initiation rites, the stars, or rituals to bring rain, and they have found traces of temporary camps nearby.
For all its importance, Narigua is not set up for tourism. There is no visitor center, no signage, and no official guides, and the access roads are rough. It suits travelers who are comfortable on dirt roads in the desert and who treat the rocks with care: look and photograph, but never touch, chalk, or climb on the carvings.
