Saltillo is fifteen minutes from Arteaga, the apple-and-cabin town of the Sierra de Arteaga with Mexico's only ski slope. General Cepeda, an hour southwest, is dinosaur country, with fossils and rock art in the desert. Two hours west is Parras de la Fuente, an oasis of vineyards where the oldest winery in the Americas still works. Over the mountains, Nuevo León's Santiago with its waterfall is an hour and a half. For a weekend, the citrus towns of Linares and General Terán, or the canyon at Bustamante.
