About Parque Natural La Estanzuela

La Estanzuela is a natural park in a forested canyon on the southern edge of Monterrey, inside Cumbres de Monterrey National Park and only 15 to 40 minutes from downtown depending on traffic. Its streams come down from the Cañón del Calabozo, and the place has a long civic history: in 1909 the Arroyo El Calabozo became the first source of drinking water for Monterrey. A stone building about 80 meters from the main gate once housed the men who looked after the water intake, and today it serves as an environmental education center.

Most visitors walk the cobblestone path, an easy route of about 3 kilometers round trip that follows the river through pine, poplar and oak and crosses two old stone bridges. Along it are natural pools and small waterfalls where swimming is allowed, and about half an hour further uphill is the most dramatic fall on the main route. For a real hike there is the El Cielo trail, which climbs about 400 meters through the canyon to the Cascada El Cielo; the round trip takes around four hours, with steep sections over 40 degrees and loose dirt, but almost the whole way is shaded.

The park is run by the state with a fairly strict set of rules. Waterfall access closes around midday, and it can be shut altogether after rain, in extreme heat or when there is fire risk. Pets, alcohol, smoking, balloons and bicycles are not allowed, nor is eating on the walkways, and you shouldn't collect plants or stones or feed the animals. Black bears are seen in the area from time to time, and birdwatchers come for the woodland species. There are restrooms only at the entrance, a parking lot, a few palapas for picnics and guided walks that can be booked in advance.
