About Monterrey
Monterrey, capital of Nuevo León, sits at about 540 meters above sea level in a valley hemmed in by the Sierra Madre Oriental, with the twin-humped Cerro de la Silla to the east and the long ridge of the Cerro de las Mitras to the west. The municipality had 1,142,952 people at the 2020 census, and the metropolitan area, which takes in San Pedro Garza García, Guadalupe, Santa Catarina, Apodaca and other municipalities, passed 5.3 million, the second largest in Mexico. Its nicknames, the Sultan of the North and the City of the Mountains, say a lot about how it sees itself.
The city took three tries to stick. Alberto del Canto founded Santa Lucía in 1577 and Luis de Carvajal founded San Luis Rey de Francia in 1582, but both settlements faded; on September 20, 1596, Diego de Montemayor founded the Ciudad Metropolitana de Nuestra Señora de Monterrey beside the Santa Lucía springs, naming it after the viceroy, the Count of Monterrey. In September 1846 the city was the scene of the Battle of Monterrey, the first large engagement of the Mexican–American War. Industry turned it into what it is today: the Cuauhtémoc brewery was founded in 1890 and in 1900 a group of investors set up the Fundidora de Fierro y Acero de Monterrey, which lit the first blast furnace in Latin America. Companies such as Cemex, FEMSA, Oxxo, Vitro, Alfa, Gruma and Banorte all grew from here, which is why Monterrey is also called Mexico's industrial capital.
For a visitor, the old center and the reinvented steelworks are the core. The Macroplaza, a 40-hectare chain of plazas built in the 1980s, runs from the neoclassical Palacio de Gobierno past the cathedral and the Faro del Comercio attributed to Luis Barragán; the Barrio Antiguo, the surviving piece of the colonial town, lies just east of it. From the Museo de Historia Mexicana, the Paseo Santa Lucía, a 2.5 km artificial river with boat rides, leads to Parque Fundidora, where the old mill is now a 144-hectare park and Horno 3 is a steel museum. On a hill to the west, the 1780s Obispado houses the regional museum and a lookout over the city. The mountains are part of daily life: hikers climb the Cerro de la Silla and the trails of Chipinque, climbers go to the limestone walls of La Huasteca, and the Grutas de García caves are a short drive north-west.
The city's signature dish is cabrito, young goat roasted slowly over coals and served with tortillas, onion and salsa; machacado con huevo, carne asada, and glorias and obleas made with goat's milk are other local staples. Summers are long and very hot, with August highs around 36 °C, and winters are mild. In June and July 2026 Monterrey was one of the host cities of the FIFA World Cup, with four matches, three in the group stage and one in the round of 32, played at the Estadio BBVA (called Estadio Monterrey for the tournament) in neighboring Guadalupe, a stadium whose stands look out on the Cerro de la Silla.
