Nature reserve 5 km northeast of General Terán
A free family park outside General Terán around a sabino tree said to be about 1,000 years old, with pools and palapas.
About five kilometers from General Terán, out among the orange groves of Nuevo León's citrus belt, the Parque Recreativo Sabino Gordo is built around the tree that gives it its name: a huge, thick-trunked sabino, or Montezuma cypress, estimated to be around 1,000 years old. Locals are proud of it, and it has become one of the symbols of the town.
The park is a classic Sunday spot for families from Terán and nearby towns. Under the shade of the old trees there are pools and wading pools, showers, palapas for picnics, playgrounds and an open-air theater, and entry is free. It is a simple, well-loved place rather than a polished resort, and on hot weekends it fills with families grilling and swimming.
If you are in General Terán in orange season, roughly from September through April, a stop here fits nicely between a walk around the pink parish church of La Soledad and a plate of cabrito or asado de puerco in town.

Getting there
The park is about five kilometers east of General Terán's center, roughly 10 minutes by car on local roads; ask in town for the way to El Sabino Gordo. Entry is free. General Terán is about an hour and a half from Monterrey via the Carretera Nacional to Montemorelos and then the road to Terán.
