Town 11 km west of Linares
A tiny town ringed by Linares, known for its suspension bridges over a clear river, wooden toys and baseball gloves.
Hualahuises is a small town about 11 kilometers west of Linares, and its municipality is entirely surrounded by the municipality of Linares, which is why people call it the Vatican of Nuevo León. It began as the Franciscan mission of San Cristóbal de Gualagüises, named after the Gualagüises, the people who lived here before the Spanish, and the town church still keeps an 18th-century carved wooden image of San Cristóbal brought by the friars.
Its best-known sight is the river. The Río Hualahuises runs clear past town, with pools of different depths for swimming, and it is crossed by suspension bridges of nearly 80 meters that the townspeople built themselves; crossing them as they sway is part of the fun. On hot weekends families come from Linares and Monterrey to swim here.
Hualahuises is also a craft town. Workshops turn wooden toys, such as spinning tops, yo-yos and baleros, and the town makes leatherwork and baseball gloves, some of which are sold abroad.
