Town 18 km southwest of Santiago
A cool mountain village at 1,650 meters with orchards, cabins, a summer sunflower field, and a lagoon that only fills after big storms.
Laguna de Sánchez is a small farming village at about 1,650 meters in the Sierra de Santiago, reached by a scenic road that climbs past Cola de Caballo and through a string of mountain valleys. Fewer than 300 people live here, growing apples, peaches, and plums and selling fruit and homemade preserves to visitors in harvest season.
The village takes its name from a lagoon that is not always there. It forms in the valley only after very heavy rain, usually from hurricanes, and then slowly dries out over the following months. In 2024 the rains of Tropical Storm Alberto filled it for the first time in about 14 years, and people drove up from Monterrey just to see it.
The climate is cool, with an average around 14 °C, morning fog, and weather that can change from rain to sun in a few hours. Visitors come for cabins with mountain views, hiking, mountain biking, horseback rides, and camping, plus kayaking and fishing when the lagoon has water. In July and August a sunflower field opens to the public and becomes a favorite photo stop.

Getting there
From Santiago, take the Carretera Nacional to El Cercado, turn right toward Cola de Caballo, and follow the paved mountain road through La Nogalera, Puerto Genovevo, Ciénega de González, and San Isidro; the drive takes well over an hour on many curves. There has also been a daily bus from El Cercado, leaving in the morning, but check the schedule locally before relying on it.
